INSPECTION & TESTING TO DETERMINE REMAINING SERVICE LIFE OF EXPANSION JOINTS

Steel Plant

CLIENT ISSUE
At a major steel plant in the Middle East where high temperatures and constant mechanical stress push every piece of equipment to its limits, the client wanted to know the exact status of 44 crucial Expansion Joints located in high-stakes areas – i.e. ducts carrying reformed gas, feed gas lines, scrubbers and other key parts of the system. Expansion Joints are essential for absorbing movement and preventing structural damage. After years of operation in such a demanding environment, the Expansion Joints had begun to show signs of wear, requiring careful inspection and expert evaluation. The client thus turned to Belman Design.

BELMAN DESIGN SOLUTION
Belman Design was tasked by the client with inspecting 44 crucial Expansion Joints. These components were not originally manufactured or supplied by the Belman Group, but the client wanted an independent and unbiased evaluation. Our examination of the Expansion Joints showed 12 that were nearing the end of their service life. Several Axial and Universal Expansion Joints exhibited deep cracks and surface degradation, while others showed significant deformation that compromised their functionality. Maintaining the integrity of the Bellows’ surfaces is essential – what may seem like a minor scratch or dent can gradually develop into a serious defect. Over time, these imperfections weaken the structure, increasing the risk of leaks or rupture. In fact, early signs of leakage in some of these Expansion Joints suggested that failure was only a matter of time. Without intervention, these deteriorating components could have caused unplanned shutdowns, extensive damage and even safety hazards for the plant’s personnel.

CONCLUSION & IMPACT
By identifying these weaknesses early, we helped the client take proactive measures, allowing for planned replacement rather than emergency interventions. This approach guaranteed the continued reliability of their operations. More than just a technical assessment, our work provided the client with peace of mind, safe in the knowledge that their piping system was secure and their production remained uninterrupted.
